Accra, July 2, GNA – Mr Francis Ametefe, Headmaster of Bueman Senior High School in the Jasikan District of the Volta Region, has appealed to government to provide the needed infrastructure for the school to enhance teaching and learning.
“Bueman SHS regardless of its contribution towards human resource development in the country for the past 50 years still lacks adequate classrooms for students and bungalows for staff. “We also lack well equipped laboratories for practical work and depend on mechanized boreholes which we sometimes cannot use due to frequent light out,” he said.
Mr Ametefe, who was speaking during the launch of the school’s 50th anniversary in Accra on Friday, also complained about the school’s Science Resource Bus which had become too old to perform any meaningful work. According to him, the school, which was established in 1960 as a private school by the late Mr Kwaku Nayo, with only two classroom blocks and summer huts and a population of 12 students, now had 1,038 students under its tutelage.
Dr Dominic Pealore, Head of Monitoring and Evaluation Unit, Ministry of Education, urged the school authorities to use the occasion to relive the past, recount the school’s achievements and challenges and also chart new paths for the future. He said as part of government’s commitment towards improving Senior High School (SHS) education, it had awarded contracts for the construction of additional classrooms in several schools across the country to meet demand for access. He praised the school’s authorities, past students, traditional authorities and the entire Jasikan and Buem Communities for their assistance to the school for the past 50 years.
Mr Vincent Avornyo, President of Bueman Old Students Association (BOSA), praised the school for the discipline instilled in its students and for shaping them to face the challenges of life. He entreated all old students to participate in main anniversary activities slated for July 2 to November 1, 2010.
He cited floats, homecoming, public lecture, debates, games, street jams and a grand durbar as some of the activities for the anniversary. According to Mr Avornyo, BOSA as part of its contribution towards the anniversary would provide the school with a computerized library and a biogas toilet facility to serve as a place of convenience and also provide gas for use in the school.
