BTS organises free breast cancer screening for pupils

A breast cancer screening and awareness programme has been held for some final-year Junior High School pupils in Accra as part of activities to commemorate World Cancer Day.

The event was organised by BTS Child Development Foundation, a child-centred foundation focused on instilling a reading culture among children and creation of awareness on child sexual abuse, mostly in deprived communities.

With the development of the girl child at the heart of its mission, the Foundation initiated the breast cancer screening and awareness programme February 6, 2016.

Participants were drawn from the Girls Education Enhancement Programme (GEEP) of the Adakum Foundation, which partnered BTS for the event.

The GEEP initiative is an educational package that involves the provision of extra tuition for girls selected from deprived Junior High Schools in deprived communities, who are preparing to write their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The girls are camped from Friday to Sunday for the 20 weeks prior to the BECE where they are also groomed and tutored for the period.

The screening and awareness creation was carried out by the Breast One Foundation.
