The Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, is quietly positioning himself to contest for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer slot ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections, according to former MP for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi.
Speaking to journalists over the weekend, Mr. Appiah-Kubi gave the strongest indication yet that discussions within the party are moving in favour of Dr. Acheampong’s candidacy, describing him as the man to unify the party and lead it to electoral victory.
“Dr. Bryan Acheampong is preparing himself for that mission,” Appiah-Kubi said. “He will speak for himself in due course, but I am only a messenger. From what I know, he is the one, and his work speaks volumes.”
Though the Abetifi MP has not publicly confirmed his intentions, his growing influence within the party and behind-the-scenes endorsements are fueling speculation that he could emerge as a frontrunner in the race to succeed the NPP’s current leadership.
Appiah-Kubi praised Dr. Acheampong’s background, calling him “a unique blend” of intellectual depth and successful business leadership, capable of appealing to both the party base and swing voters.
“With him, we’re killing two birds with one stone,” he added. “He’s a symbol of victory.”
The NPP, which lost the presidency in the 2024 elections, faces a critical test in 2028. Party insiders are reportedly seeking a candidate who can not only consolidate internal factions but also present a fresh, dynamic image to the electorate.
Dr. Acheampong, a former Minister of Food and Agriculture and a respected figure in both political and business circles, has been quietly gaining traction as a potential standard-bearer.
For now, official word remains pending, but all eyes are on the Abetifi MP as the party looks ahead to what could be a defining contest in its political future.
