A fleet of buses under the much-talked about Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) today hit the streets in Accra, but are neither insured nor registered, Management of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) has confirmed.
For a project of this magnitude, one would have expected that the buses would passed for all the necessary documentations before they are deployed onto the streets.
But the Marketing and Communications Manager of the Gt. Accra Passenger Transport Executive in charge of the BRT system, Roland Bruce revealed that the buses are yet to be insured by the close of the week.
“We are in the process of registering all those buses, and actually ensuring that hopefully by the close of this week, when we are done with the test-run, all the buses should be insured and registered,” Bruce disclosed in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM.
The BRT system popularly coined ‘Ayalolo’ was introduced by government recently to help ease transportation in the cities.
The pilot programme which began on Monday September 26 recorded low patronage from the public, reports say.
As part of the pilot programme, commuters are being offered free rides on the air-conditioned buses fitted with USB and Wi-Fi services for this week.
