Brouhaha over MMDCEs appointments “unhealthy” – Kyei Baffour

A local governance expert George Kyei Baffour has described as “unhealthy” and “unfortunate” the unabated agitations over the selection of Metropolitan, Municipal District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

His comment comes in the wake of deepening tensions among some supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) over president Akufo-Addo’s representatives as MMDCEs.

Some leading members of the NPP and top government appointees have been fingered in alleged attempts to influence the president’s choice of MMDCEs.

This has created tension between party leaders and supporters; the latest is in the Nadowli Kaleo District where the Minister of Gender, Otiko Afisa Djaba is being accused of trying to interfere in the selection of a DCE for the area.

Commenting on the development Monday April 24, 2017, on the Starr Midday News, Kyei Baffour bemoaned the culture.

“…These developments are unhealthy and unfortunate even though we have seen it occur in the past,” he told Naa Dede Tettey.

According to him, “we are in a constitutional era and the president has been given the mandate and indeed the prerogative to nominate persons,” for the aforementioned positions so Ghanaians irrespective of their ethnic and political affiliations [and] must allow the president to perform his constitutional duties.
