Sunyani (B/A) Sept. 27, GNA – The people of the Brong Ahafo have been asked to bury their tribal sentiments and contribute meaningfully to the development of the area.
They were reminded that without unity they would continue to lag behind in development.
Nana Obiri Boahen, a minister of state at the Ministry of the Interior in the erstwhile New Patriotic Party regime, made the call at an awards ceremony, organised by the Brong Ahafo Students Union (BASU.
It was to recognize persons, who had made outstanding contributions to the development of the BASU.
The union presented citations to Osagyefo Oseadyefo Agyemang Badu II, Omanhene of Dormaa, Dr. Kwame Saarah Mensah, a former Regional Secretary, Nana Boahen and Mr. Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo, Regional Minister and among others.
Nana Boahen, also National Patron of the Union, noted that the Region was respected for the co-existence of its various ethnic groupings.
He advised the members of the Union to be proud of the Region and to promote the rich and unique cultural heritage of the area to attract foreign and local investors.
Mr. Kwadwo Adjei-Darko, former Member of Parliament for Sunyani West, appealed to Brong Ahafo citizens abroad to contribute to the development of the Region.
He expressed worry that partisan politics had divided the people, which had affected the development of the Region.
Mr. Adjei-Darko said unionism was the best way students could be heard of and asked all students in the Region to register with the BASU.
He asked the Union to mobilize resources and work hard towards the development of the Region.
Mr. Eric Amponsah, outgoing BASU president, expressed concern that work on the Regional Library Complex in Sunyani had been halted.
He said the old regional library could not accommodate more students, and appealed to the authorities to expedite action on the new library project.
Mr. Amponsah mentioned the lack of office accommodation, stationery and other office equipment as problems facing the Union.
He asked the Regional Coordinating Council to fulfill its promise to provide the Union with office accommodation.
Mr Amponsah appealed to Mr. Nyamekye-Marfo, to support the Union achive its objectives.
