Brong-Ahafo Region honours its farmers

The Brong-Ahafo Region on Friday honoured over 285 farmers from its eight municipalities and 19 districts for their various efforts.

This was part of the regional celebration of the 31st National Farmers Day which was held on the theme: “Transform Ghana – Invest in Agriculture”.

Mr Kwame Ayana, 36, alias ‘One time’, from Goaso in the Asunafo North Municipality was adjudged the regional best farmer.

He received a tricycle, a sewing machine, a 32 inches flat screen television, two wellington boots, a full piece of wax print, a knapsack spraying machine, two bags of NPK fertilizer and assorted drinks.

Mr Ayana, after the honour was made, called on farmers to collaborate and communicate effectively with the Agricultural Extension Officers for success in the farming industry.

He said a farmer could only make progress by following the advice and directives of such officers because they were the field officers with the technical knowledge and expertise.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Ayana said he began professional farming 18 years ago, as both livestock and crop farmer.

He said the farms were situated at various locations but consisted of hundreds of cattle, sheep, goats, turkeys and fowls, and varieties of crops.

Madam Akua Kyeremaa, 65, of Forikrom in the Techiman Municipality, who has been farming for more than two decades, was also declared the overall Municipal Best Farmer.

Madam Kyeremaa practices both crop and animal farming and her prize included a Tricycle, a 32 inches flat screen television, a knapsack spraying machine, one packet of roofing sheets, three cutlasses and four bags of cement.

Messrs Eric Opoku and Philip Oppong Amponsah, the Regional Minister and Techiman Municipal Chief Executive respectively and Dr Cyril T. Quist, Regional Director for Ministry of Food and Agriculture, delivered separate addresses at the function.
