Brong Ahafo Athlete Wins PANAFEST Marathon

Cape Coast, Sept 3, Daniel Korankye from the Brong Ahafo Region today won the 21-kilometre marathon race organized as part of this year’s Pan African Historical Theatre Festival (PANAFEST ’97) in Cape Coast. Korankye, 32, won the race with a time of 1:10:19. Timothy Mandela of Greater Accra came second with a time of 1:11:34 while Alhaji Mohamed of the Western Region recorded a time of 1:13:58 to win the third position. In the women’s division, Gifty Abankwa of Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) came first in a time of 1:15:53; Genevive Nakpi came second in 1:39.3 and Ama Yaaba was third in 1:43:33. Miss Abigail Hayford, a seven-year-old girl, received a standing ovation when she placed fifth in the race which attracted 15 participants. The marathon, which started at 7.15 a.m. at Elmina Police Station, went through Ankaful, Jukwa junction, Pedu, Adisadel, Bakaano and ended in front of Cape Coast Castle.
