Accra, April 14, GNA – The British High Commissioner, Mr Gordon Wetherell, on Wednesday paid a courtesy call on the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, at his residence near the Accra Central Mosque in Accra.
A statement issued by the High Commission said the meeting came in the wake of a recent visit to the UK, organised by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the Islamic Foundation for Peace and Development (IFPAD), a local Non-governmental organisation (NGO), founded by the National Chief Imam’s Grand Adviser.
The statement said the visit took place as a result of discussions held between IFPAD and the High Commission last year, during which IFPAD expressed the desire to work with UK-based Muslim and non-Muslim organisations to promote peace through inter-faith dialogue. While in the UK, the IFPAD delegation met with Christian, Muslim, and Jewish community leaders, academics, and NGOs with whom they are formulating plans for future cooperation.
IFPAD also used the opportunity to explore ways of initiating development projects in Ghana, particularly within low-income areas. The statement said the High Commission maintains contact with a wide spectrum of religious communities, and the meeting built on the good relations that already existed between the High Commission and the Muslim community.
