Tamale (N/R), July 9, The British Council will for the next three years provide 24 million cedis annually to the University for Development Studies (UDS) for linkage activities with the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom. The grant, under the council’s higher education linkage scheme, will sponsor an exchange programme for two academic staff of the Department of Animal Husbandry of UDS and the Veterinary School of the University of Glasgow. Mr. Colin Stevenson, director of the British Council, Ghana, announced this in Tamale where he presented a computer, books and laboratory equipment valued at about 20 million cedis to the UDS. Mr. Stevenson said though Universities in the United Kingdom have 13 links with departments of Ghana’s Universities, the UDS had only one and promised to correct the imbalance. He said the linkages are on equal terms not withstanding the logistic advantage of the Universities in the United Kingdom. Dr. K.J Fordjour of the Department of Animal Husbandry said the linkage will concentrate on poverty alleviation and high mortality rate of animals in the country. He said the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has also donated 10 million cedis to back the department’s activities especially in animal production. Dr. Fordjour said the department will organise meetings and seminars for farmers to keep them abreast with the latest technology in the agriculture. The Vice Chancellor of UDS, Professor R.B. Bening thanked the British Council for the assistance and appealed to them to assist the University to catch up with the other Universities in the country.
