Bright Akwetey commends government for take-over of Tema Shipyard

Lawyer Bright O. Akwetey, a leading member of the Convention Peoples’ Party (CPP) on Tuesday commended the Government for resuming full ownership of Tema Shipyard.

“This is a commendable and bold initiative to reclaim our State assets sold out on a silver platter,” Mr Akwetey told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra.

The Government has reclaimed its 60 per cent share in Tema Shipyard which was sold to Penang Ship Building Company of Malaysia.

“It is a strategic national asset, and reclamation of the 60 per cent shares that gives the Government 100 per cent ownership is in the supreme interest of the nation, especially at a time when Ghana is pumping oil and gas,” he added.

Mr Koku Anyidoho, Director of Communications at the Office of the President, broke the news of the reclamation to journalists in Accra on Monday.

Mr Akwetey appealed to the Government to fight corruption, injustices, and crime, stressing that it was time governments dealt decisively with crime and corruption whether the perpetrators were sympathisers of the ruling party or not. “If you offend the law, you must face it”.

He commended CPP delegates who attended the party’s first National Delegates Congress which elected the flag bearer for Election 2012.

Mr Akwetey appealed to all supporters of CPP to rally behind the flag bearer, Dr Abu Sakara Foster to ensure that the party performed creditably in both the Presidential and Parliamentary elections.**
