Bridge spanning River Desiri collapses

Kasotie (Ash), Oct 19, GNA-The bridge spanning the Desiri river at Kasotie in the Atwima-Mponua district of Ashanti has collapsed following floods as a result of continuous rainfall in the area.

The area has therefore, been cut off from the rest of the district resulting in large quantities of foodstuffs and cocoa being locked up. Briefing the Ghana News Agency during a visit to the town on Monday, Mr Agyemang Duah, the headteacher of the Local Authority Primary School and an opinion leader, said the situation had created a lot of hardships to the people.

He said travellers had to walk long distances in the night to Mpasaso to board vehicles to Kumasi.

Mr Duah said the situation has also affected attendance at school, as a lot of those who commute daily from the nearby villages had not been regular at school due to the floods.

He has therefore, appealed to the district assembly and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to help repair the bridge to restore the link between the town and the rest of the district.
