Brain drain among medical doctors in Ghana has drastically reduced by about 95 percent, a lecturer at the School of Medical Science at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has stated.
According to Prof. Baffour Opoku, who spoke to Ultimate FM’s Isaac Bediako Justice, the situation is as a result of the introduction of the Ghana College post graduate studies, which allows graduate doctors the opportunity of further studies in the country.
In the view of the consultant Obstetrics and gynecologist, the development could also reflect the fact that doctors in the country are now enjoying better conditions of service and remuneration compared to the situation in the past.
The revelation comes in the wake of the recent impasse between government and doctors over their service conditions which stalled for several weeks.
The matter however appears to have been addressed since the aggrieved doctors are no longer heard threatening strikes as they used to do over the last few months.
Brain drain in the health sector has been a major cause for worry for successive governments in Ghana. Several measures have in the past, been put in place, to address the challenge.
