Boxing Is Back On Track – NSA Clarifies Boxing Suspension As Temporary

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has moved to calm growing concerns within Ghana’s boxing fraternity, clarifying that the recent halt on events is not a permanent ban but a temporary suspension.

NSA boss Yaw Ampofo Ankrah explained that the decision was taken to “put things in order” and ensure the sport operates under proper structures. “Boxing is back on track. There is no ban. It is a suspension to put things in order so the right things are done,” he told reporters.

The suspension followed heightened concerns over safety and regulatory compliance after the tragic death of Ernest ‘Bahubali’ Akushey.

Ampofo Ankrah stressed that the NSA’s priority is to safeguard athletes while maintaining the sport’s credibility. Discussions are ongoing with the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) and other stakeholders to address gaps in medical, safety, and organizational protocols before competitions resume fully.

The clarification will come as a relief to promoters, boxers, and fans alike, many of whom had feared the sport could be sidelined for a longer period.
