Bourse still falling, volume thin

ACCRA, Sept 27 (Reuters) – The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) index fell to a 1999 low for the fourth consecutive session on Monday in extremely low turnover, the official market report showed.

The all-share index lost 0.45 point to close at 760.36, taking it down 12.44 percent on the year to date. In the previous session, it dropped 5.24 points to 760.81.

Volume fell sharply to 20,400 shares, worth just 4.99 million cedis ($1,764). Last Friday’s volume was 1,163,700 shares, worth 460.30 million cedis ($162,995).

Ashanti Goldfields shares were not traded and remained unchanged in price despite the surge in gold bullion to five-month highs after European central banks decided Monday to restrict gold sales for the next five years.

The most active stock, Mechanical Lloyd, traded 19,000 shares at an unchanged price of 170 cedis.

Social Security Bank, the only loser, gave up its 10 cedi gain from Friday and closed at 1,980, with only 700 shares traded.

The rest of the board closed unchanged, with minor volume posted in Super Paper, Unilever and Guinness.
