Boost for agric sector

Agona Swedru(C/R), April 25, GNA – The International Grain Producing Company (IGPC), an international agricultural firm based in Canada, is to invest 20 million dollars to boost the agricultural sector in Ghana.

The facility is to help maize and Soya bean farmers to increase their production for export and for local consumption. Mr Thomas Morghan-Acquaah, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Company, made this known when he addressed 200 maize and Soya bean farmers at Agona Swedru.

He said the company had lodged the money with the ARB Apex Bank to be disbursed through Community and Rural banks. Mr Morghan-Acquaah said over 200,000 maize and Soya bean farmers from the northern and southern sectors of the country would benefit from the programme.

He said the farmers could benefit from the facility through the formation of groups or cooperatives to ensure prompt payment adding that the loan is a revolving fund.

He said the officials of the company had toured the three northern regions, Afram Plains and yet to visit Western, Brong Ahafo and Ashanti regions to access the situation.

Mr Morghan-Acquaah said the intention was to boost the production of maize and soya beans and that the company would assist processing of the products for export to avoid post harvest loses. Mr Richard Acquaah, Agona West Coordinator of the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP), expressed his appreciation to the company for the assistance to the farmers in the area and appealed to the chiefs and land owners to release land to the people especially the youth to go into farming.
