The Bolgatanga Preparatory Junior High School at Zaare in the Bolgatanga Municipality has been virtually reduced to a death trap and if nothing is done to remedy the situation the worst should be expected.
The School which has a population of about 500 pupils has not seen any major repairs since it was built in the Acheampong regime with all the classrooms leaking whenever it rains making teaching and learning very difficult.
The walls of the entire structure have also developed major cracks with many of the windows, chairs and tables being totally destroyed.
The Assistant headmaster of the School, Mr Martin Ayamga, appealed to stakeholders such as the Bolgatanga Municipal, the Member of Parliament for the Area, Mr Opam Brown Akolbire, Non-Governmental Organizations and all its old students to come to the aid of the school by helping to renovate it.
Whiles the boys’ prefect, Master Raymond Asaduku, said academic performance of the school which keeps on dwindling each and every year could be attributed to the bad condition of the school, the girls’ prefect of the school, Ms Atindana Bridget, complained about the lack of proper public place of convenience which forced many students to stay at home.
Mr Martin Ayamga said stakeholders interested in improving the quality of education in the area should take the appeal seriously as it was affecting performances.
He also blamed the fallen standards of the school to the lack of adequate teachers to meet the needs of the increasing population saying “a single teacher will have to teach the teaming classes made up of A to D stream and mark all the numerous exercises. This does not make the teacher teach effectively.”
He entreated parents to monitor and supervise their wards at home and to encourage them to do their homework.
The Chief of Zaare, Naba Paul Agoo, admonished the school children to study hard saying they had everything it takes to study and pass very well except that they were lazy.
