The second in command of the erstwhile Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) Major Retired Kojo Boakye-Djan has disclosed to Peace Fm that, he is not in the country to testify before the National Reconciliation Commission in its on-going hearing.
He said his first mission is to re-unite with his family after his 22 year exile in the United Kingdom, and to possibly meet state officials on issues pertaining to the state.
According to Major Boakye-Djan, he will only go to the NRC to observe hearings from the Public Gallery. He stated however that, he will go to give testimony, if it is at the instance of the commission. As to why it has taken him 22 years to come down, Major Boakye-Djan intimated that, the security situation in the country has improved tremendously, unlike in the previous regime, where his safety could not be assured.
Major Boakye-Djan who used to be a close associate to the AFRC Chairman and ex-President Jerry John Rawlings, hinted that, he has not been speaking to Flt. Lft. Rawlings for the past 22 years because, he felt betrayed, when Flt. Lft. Rawlings staged a coup and overthrew a constitutional government on 31st December, 1981. He said he has always held a different view from that of the ex-President, ever since he overthrew the Limann Administration, which the AFRC had handed over power to.
Incidentally, both Major Boakye-Djan and Flt. Lft. Rawlings boarded the same flight from London to Accra on Saturday. They however did not see each other until their flight touched down at the Kotoka International Airport. Major Boakye further stated that, he will stay in the country for two weeks and leave for London.
