Boafo appeals to investors to establish leisure centres

Kumasi, March 11, GNA-Mr Sampson Kwaku Boafo, Ashanti Regional Minister, has appealed to British contractors and consultants currently visiting the country to consider establishing leisure centres in the country.

He said leisure centres were completely unknown in the country and it was time for investors to venture in that area as a means of promoting sports and healthy living among Ghanaians.

Mr Boafo made the appeal when a delegation of British contractors and consultants called on him at his office in Kumasi on Friday. The delegation, which is made up of business executives and engineers of reputable constructional and event promotion organisations, is in the country to explore avenues for possible collaboration with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of CAN 2008 in the organisation of the tournament.

Mr Boafo stressed the need for vigorous sports and leisure infrastructure development in the country to promote sporting activities, especially in the lesser-known sports. He said the Ashanti Region, which is strategically located, abounds with huge potentials in the leisure and hospitality industry and urged the members of the delegation to consider investing in that area. Mr Peter Mann, spokesman of the delegation, stressed the need for Ghana to develop its sports infrastructure to be able to attract major sporting events.

He said the hosting of the CAN 2008 should serve as springboard to undertake major sports infrastructure in the country. Mr Mann said the delegation was exploring avenues where they could collaborate with the LOC to organise a successful event and leave a legacy behind for Ghanaians.
