… Over Bagbin?s presentation
It is mind boggling about the circumstances under which the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) stormed the premises of the Koforidua Polytechnic and picked the leadership of the Northern Students Union for interrogation over a presentation made by some northern members of parliament, especially that of Mr. Alban Bagbin.
This happened when the Koforidua Polytechnic chapter of the Northern Students Union held their third anniversary last Saturday. Present at the ceremony were prominent and well-known northerners within the Koforidua metropolis.
They also invited a number of northern members of parliament including Hon. Alban Bagbin, Hawa Yakubu, Hudu Iddrisu and Norbert Awulley.
Mr. Bagbin spoke on the topic ?The role of the student in conflict resolution.? Madam Hawa Yakubu spoke on issues of northern unity and the other invited guest went through other disciplines.
The programme was very successful and very well-attended by more than hundred students both from the northern and other regions.
The following day, Sunday May 23, the BNI personnel visited the campus to invite the president of the union, Mr. Yakubu Alhassan, and the secretary of the union to accompany them to the regional headquarters of the BNI.
When the officials arrived at the campus, the two persons had gone out. Upon their arrival, they were informed that the BNI was after them in connection with the seminar they held the previous day.
They therefore reported at the BNI office, on Monday, and were interrogated about the seminar and what the various speakers said, especially in respect of the speech of the minority leader.
After the interrogation, they were granted bail and asked to report again later.
It has become the talk of the day on the campus of the school especially among those who were present at the ceremony.
While others find nothing wrong with what Mr. Bagbin said, others are also of the view that the BNI was wasting time on unnecessary issues such as this.
