Black Queens Coach Kim Bjorkegren Eyes Underdog Glory at WAFCON 2024

Head coach of Ghana’s Black Queens, Kim Lars Bjorkegren, has acknowledged that his team is not among the favourites for the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) but remains optimistic about their chances to cause an upset.

The Swedish tactician, who took over earlier this year, believes Ghana could emerge as a “strong underdog” at the tournament, set to begin on July 5 in Morocco.

“Ghana hasn’t won the title, and the last final was in 2006. So, we’re not among the favourites,” Bjorkegren told CAFOnline.com. “But I believe we can be a strong underdog. If we stick to the game plan and have a good day, we can beat any team.”

The Black Queens have yet to lift the WAFCON trophy despite making three final appearances in 1998, 2002, and 2006. The team will mark its 13th tournament appearance with hopes of ending the long drought under Bjorkegren’s leadership.

Since his appointment, Bjorkegren has focused on improving the team’s tactical organisation and fitness levels. “We still have work to do, both on and off the pitch. Tactically, we need to be more organised, and fitness levels must improve,” he noted.

The coach has also emphasised the importance of long-term development, including helping Ghana’s top players gain exposure in stronger leagues. “With every camp, we grow stronger,” he added.

The Black Queens will face stiff competition in Morocco, but Bjorkegren is determined to defy expectations and guide the team to their first-ever WAFCON title.
