Government Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has described the delay in paying the Black Queens’ bonuses as “unacceptable,” assuring that the Sports Ministry is actively working to resolve the issue.
The national women’s team recently made headlines after boycotting training sessions in protest over unpaid bonuses from their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign in Morocco. Each player is reportedly owed $9,500, prompting growing frustration within the camp.
Speaking in an interview, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu acknowledged the legitimacy of the players’ grievances but urged calm as efforts continue behind the scenes to address the situation.
“The delay is unacceptable, but the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is working hard to ensure this matter is settled quickly,” he said.
He emphasized that the government values the team’s achievements and remains committed to ensuring all entitlements are honoured.
The Black Queens, who hold a 3–0 first-leg advantage over Egypt in the 2025 WAFCON qualifiers, are expected to play the return fixture in Accra on Tuesday.
The dispute has sparked broader debate over the treatment of female athletes in Ghana, with many calling for greater transparency and fairness in how bonuses and allowances are handled across national teams.
