Kumasi, Feb. 17, GNA – Right Rev. Nuh Ben Abubekr, Methodist Bishop of Kumasi, has called on journalists not to succumb to death threats in the performance of their professional duties.
He said as the fourth estate of the realm, the media have at stake in building a peaceful, united and prosperous nation and should therefore not be deterred by threats to recoil into their shells. Bishop Abubekr said this in a message of condolence to the Ashanti regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the widow and family of Mr Samuel Best Ennin, GJA regional chairman and News Editor of Ashh FM who was killed by unknown assailants on Friday, February 9 in Kumasi.
He described Mr Ennin as affable and respectful, saying under his chairmanship the Kumasi Diocese of Methodist Church enjoyed fruitful co-operation with the media.
Bishop Abubekr said, by the death of Mr Ennin, the Ashanti GJA has lost a capable and unifying leader. He prayed for God’s guidance and protection for the widow, children and family and hoped the ideas he cherished will be sustained by the association. “It is regrettable that the life of such an energetic young man has been cut short, however with God all those who commit such heinous crimes will not go unpunished”, the message added. 17 Feb. 07
