Birim North Communities Cut Off From Rest Of the Country

Akyem Ofoase, May 22, GNA- A number of communities in the Birim North District have been cut from the rest of the country following torrential rains that have rendered portions of the Akyem Oda -Nkawkaw road impassable.

Many vehicles got stuck on the road at Akyem Brenase and were being towed by tractors.

Mr David Oppon-Kusi, the MP for Ofoase/Ayirebi in the company of Mr Eric Osei-Ansere and Mr J.S. Mensah, Ofoase/Ayirebi Constituency chairman and secretary respectively of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) inspected the road on Monday. Vehicles travelling from Akyem Oda to Nkawkaw had to make a detour through Akyem Adwafo before continuing their journey. Mr Oppon- Kusi regretted that such an important road would be left to deteriorate for all these years and appealed to the Ministry of Road and Transport as a matter of urgency to tar it once and for all. He said the present deplorable state of the road was hampering economic activities in the area as farmers were finding it difficult to transport their farm produce to marketing centres.

Meanwhile, some residents told the Ghana News Agency that they would boycott the 2008 general elections if nothing were done about the road.

In another development, Mr Dominic Acquah, headmaster of the Akyem Oda Saint Francis Secondary/technical School has appealed to the Birim South District Assembly to construct new toilet facilities in the school to save the students from the present agony they were going through. He said since the toilet facilities for both boys and girls caved in last term the students had to queue to use the facilities of the staff, a situation which, according to him was compelling students who felt shy to resort to defecating in the nearby bushes.
