Signals coming from the sprawling conurbation of Nima in Accra, described as the largest Zongo in the country, suggest that some big fish are about to change political sides, and the beneficiary would be President Kufuor and his NPP.
Three important opinion leaders, one of them a former campaign manager of the NDC and two others, also commanding some respectable stature in Nima/Maamobi would formally announce their decision at a press conference “before long”.
Their names are being withheld because of a gentleman’s agreement to keep such details under the lid until they go public themselves.
The results of the last parliamentary elections showed that the status of the NDC in Nima/Maamobi had been grossly exaggerated. The triumph of then candidate Kufuor was also a proof of the strength of the NPP in the constituency.
At the time of writing yesterday, the about-to-decamp NDC big fish were said to be in touch with the leadership of their new party as they prepare to announce their formal severance with their old party.
When ADM got in touch with Alhaji Yusif Ahmed, a well known Nima resident, he confirmed the decamping story and assured that it would come on very soon.
The NPP has grown stronger in Nima/Maamobi and one of the reasons for this development is the re-assurance that they are not anti-Zongo as carried about by the NDC during the 2000 elections.
When President J.A. Kufuor made his spectacular and triumphant entry into Nima/Maamobi the first since he came into power, the area went agog in excitement. The president re-christened the suburb The Settlement of West Africa because of its cosmopolitan mix.
After Mr. Kofi Wayo’s move to Dr. Edward Mham’s PNC, his former constituency office on the Nima Highway was taken over by the PNC and painted in their colours with their logo. The NPP has acquired a new office in a storey building overlooking the Nima Market and ADM has learnt it would soon be opened for business.
