Big cannabis haul, three held

Three persons, including a minor, have been arrested in connection with the seizure of a large quantity of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis, in transit to Niger.

Iddrisu Katumi, 42, a driver, Majeed Issaka, 23, together with the juvenile, said to be a driver’s mate, had compressed the substance into 125 parcels and hidden them in a compartment of a DAF bus.

They were put before a Kumasi Circuit Court presided over by Mr William Boampong on Friday, and were denied bail.

The two accused adults were remanded in prison custody while the minor was asked to be held in a police juvenile cell.

They are facing charges of possessing narcotic drugs without lawful custody and possessing narcotic drug without lawful authority.

Their pleas were not taken, and they would make their next court appearance on Thursday, March 13.

Two other accomplices are on the run, and Police Inspector Gulliver Kwabena Tenkorang told the court that the police were doing everything to arrest and bring them to book.

He said the substance was intercepted at about midnight on February 24, at a snap checkpoint the police mounted at Suame in Kumasi, based on a tip off.

The prosecution said the police was working hard to trace the source of supply.
