There was jubilation in Bibiani on Sunday as GoldStars thrashed Accra Lions 4-0 at a raucous Duns Park to seal their first-ever Ghana Premier League title in style.
In front of a packed home crowd, the Western Region side delivered a commanding performance to wrap up what has been a fairytale season under head coach Frimpong Manso. With title rivals Nations FC stumbling in their penultimate fixture, GoldStars knew that a win on the final day would hand them the crown and they grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
It took just four minutes for the nerves to settle as Abdul Farouk slotted home a clever cross from the edge of the box to send the home fans into early celebration.
The energy in the stadium reached fever pitch in the 18th minute when Kelvin Oppong pounced on a defensive lapse from the already-relegated Accra Lions, firing home from a set piece to make it 2-0.
After that electric opening, the match settled into a more controlled rhythm, with the hosts comfortably protecting their lead going into the break.
The second half saw Bibiani GoldStars waste several chances to extend their advantage, but it was only fitting that their star man Atta Kumi would find the net. The prolific forward who is a standout performer all season, scored the third to effectively wrap up the title and give the party official status.
There was still time for a fourth, as Kumi struck again to finish with 11 goals for the season, securing his place as the club’s top scorer and one of the league’s key figures.
This win not only confirmed GoldStars as the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League champions, but also marked a continuing trend in Ghanaian football, the rise of first-time title winners. They follow Medeama SC (2023) and FC Samartex (2024) in lifting the trophy for the first time, showing a shift in power away from the traditional giants.
GoldStars also become the third team from Ghana’s Western Region to win the title in as many years, further underlining the region’s growing dominance in domestic football.
