Nkonya-Ahenkro (V/R), May 27, GNA – The newly inaugurated Biakoye District, accumulated a net amount of GH¢1.548 million as its share of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) between 2008 and the third quarter of 2010.
A total of GH¢1.411 million was deducted at source for various government programmes, making the actuals allocated to the district from the Administrator of the DACF amounting to GH¢2.959 million.
Nana Louis Akatta, Biakoye District Chief Executive, announced this at its maiden ordinary assembly meeting at Nkonya-Ahenkro on Thursday. He indicated that a chunk of the amount would go into infrastructural development to accommodate new staff posted to the district.
Nana Akattah said key among the projects would be the re-activation and revitalization of sub-structures including Unit, Town and Area councils (UTAs) and invest in areas that would yield dividend, especially markets, lorry parks and electricity.
He said some contractors have filed for variation of contract sum on projects, which were awarded on behalf of the district by the Regional Tender Board in 2008 due to a court injunction on the siting of the district. He also appealed to the members to determine the way forward.
The DCE said eight schools are benefiting from the Government’s School Feeding Programme and that the scheme would be expanded to other deprived schools soon.
Nana Akattah said 366 youths are currently on various modules of the National Youth Employment Programme with lots more benefiting from the Block Farming Project.
He said 14 six-unit classroom block with offices, stores and libraries are also being constructed under the Schools-Under-Trees Project with funding from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) in addition to the distribution of free exercise books and school uniforms.
Nana Akattah said the Assembly intended to sponsor teacher trainees in colleges of education to fill the vacancies in the classrooms in the district.
He appealed to those with dissenting views to bury the hatchet and gird their loins for the corporate development of the district.
Mr Godwin Aboyo-Owusu, Presiding Member, urged members to eschew individual interest and focus on the common goal of improving the developments in the district.
He urged members of the district to change their attitudes to work, honour their tax obligations which are pre-requisites for development.
