Berekum teachers fund JSS block with their allowances

Berekum (B/A), July 15, GNA- Teachers at Berekum Senior Secondary School (SSS) are financing the construction of a Junior Secondary School (JSS) block to be attached to the School.

The three-classroom project started in April, is at roofing level and is expected to be ready by September.

Mr George Agyei Henne, the Headmaster, who said this at a meeting of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), added that the JSS would initially enrol only first year students and thereafter enrol, students for the higher classes.

The Headmaster said he was not happy about the practice by some parents and guardians to refuse to allow their JSS graduates to attend any of the SSS in their localities. ”This attitude is defeating the reason for the establishment of such schools”, he said.

Mr Henne said it had been decided that any form one student whose examination mark in the terminal examination fall below the 45 per cent mark would be sacked.

He asked parents and guardians to take note of the new measures and encourage their students to learn hard because the school would not tolerate excuses and pleas.

Mr Moses Kofi Soga, a Visual Art Tutor of the School and Technical Coordinator in-charge of the JSS project, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the teaching staff mooted the idea for the JSS project. The teachers financed the project with their allowances from the monthly extra classes they conduct for the pupils.

He could not say how much the project would cost but said 72 million cedis had so far been used on the project and appealed to Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), groups and individuals to assist the teachers.
