Nine students of the Berekum Holy Family Nursing and Midwifery Training College (NMTC), have been dismissed for indiscipline and low academic performance.
They include seven males and two females.
Mrs. Monica Nkrumah, Principal of the College, disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in an interview after their Seventeenth Matriculation ceremony on Friday at Berekum.
A total of 160 students, comprising 100 nurses and 60 midwives, 130 of whom were females and 30 males, were matriculated.
Mrs. Nkrumah stated that the 2013/2014 academic year’s number of dismissals had been the highest in the history of the institution; she therefore advised the students to avoid bad companies, in order to have enough time to study seriously.
The Principal reminded the students on the need to value the opportunity for their admission into the College, as total of 2,840 candidates applied, but 2,473 were shortlisted for admission interview, while total of260 got admitted both in the main campus at Berekum and St. Mary’s campus at Drobo
She urged the students to abide by the rules and regulations of the College, because “there are sanctions for violating the code of conduct of the School,” the Principal stressed.
Mrs. Nkrumah said in spite of all the infrastructural challenges like inadequate staff accommodation and human resources, Management had put in place measures that would ensure comfortable life for all students in a conducive and tranquil teaching and learning environment.
She appealed to the Berekum Municipal Assembly to assist in the construction of the road leading to the College -to check erosion; explaining that since the College was situated on a sloping ground, all the rain water from the town drain through the school, and thereby affects academic work.
On health, the Principal advised the general public to live healthy lifestyles with regular exercises, because the nation could only progress with healthy people.
Mrs. Nkrumah entreated the citizenry to check their eating habits, practise personal hygiene with proper environmental and good sanitation practices, to be able to control epidemics like cholera.
