Berekum Chelsea Historic Win Is A Boost To Our Confederation Cup Preparations – Kotoko Head Coach

Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito says his side’s long-awaited victory over Berekum Chelsea will serve as the perfect springboard ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round tie against Nigeria’s Kwara United.

The Porcupines ended a 15-year winless run at the Golden City Park thanks to a decisive strike from forward Albert Amoah, who slipped the ball through goalkeeper Adu Emmanuel’s legs to seal a famous victory.

Zito believes the result has lifted both players and supporters at a crucial moment. “It is positive because my supporters will be happy,” he said. “They will come to the stadium and support us against Kwara United. I am happy with the nice start, and we will use that to motivate ourselves.”

Kotoko, who will host Kwara United on 21 September at the Accra Sports Stadium, have made 15 new signings during the transfer window. Zito admits the squad will need time to gel but is optimistic that the fresh energy will be an asset in their continental campaign.

The head coach is no stranger to African competition. He guided Dreams FC to the semi-finals of the Confederation Cup in the 2023/24 season, and has already won four trophies since taking over Kotoko midway through last season.

With momentum on their side and home fans expected to turn up in their numbers, Kotoko will be aiming to make a strong statement as they look to progress in Africa’s second-tier club competition.
