Be professional – Akufo-Addo to police

President Nana Akufo-Addo has charged the Ghana Police Service to uphold professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

Shortly before the announcement of the appointment of the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) COP David Asante Apeatu on Wednesday, January 25, Mr Akufo-Addo said his interest is that the “country has a security service which is professional…and whose responsibilities is to the state”.

He emphasised that security officers should be people whose allegiance is to the state and not any particular group since governments come and go from time to time.

He charged the police to enforce the laws of the country in a “dispassionate, impartial and professional manner” adding that: “Anybody who flouts the law should expect the police who is doing their duty to act against him or her”.

The president underscored that responsibilities of the police should be “colour blind as far as political, religious or other allegiances are concerned. That is the Police Service that I know that the Ghanaian is looking for”.

Mr Akufo-Addo indicated that residents will feel secure when they know that the police are “honest” in discharging their duties so that they can go about their daily activities in peace and security.

He was of the view that Ghanaians will be glad to have a police that will not subject them to “unnecessary harassment”.
