Be part of solution to problems facing education, Yankah

Kumasi (Ashanti), 29 Jan. ’99, –

Mr Kojo Yankah, Ashanti Regional Minister, has asked Ghanaians to address themselves to the challenges of assisting to identify solutions to problems bedevilling the country’s education system. He said to realise the vision of attaining middle income status by 2020, it is important to give the country quality basic education. Mr Yankah was inaugurating the Planning Committee for the Ashanti Regional Round Table Conference on Education in Kumasi. The committee, under the Chairmanship of Mrs Gladys Kwapon, Acting Regional Director of Education, is made up of Education Officers, retired educationists and journalists. It will help unravel factors undermining the growth of quality education in the region and find realistic and effective antidote to them. Mr Yankah noted that by 2000 many countries would have gone very far with technology and the management of their economies, and Ghana cannot afford to be left behind. He said the country will therefore need to have well educated people who have confidence in themselves to husband her reources. The Regional Minister said all resources need to be harnessed to ensure adequate preparation towards the competition and challenges of the future. “As parents we have a moral responsibility to ensure quality education for ourselves”, he added. Mr I. K. Gyasi, a retired educationist, told the Ministry of Education to admit that there are problems facing the education in the country and to tell the truth about the problems to the Government. He was unhappy with pronouncements that tend to discourage attempts by schools to help themselves through the Parent-Teacher-Associations (PTA’s).
