The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP), 1st National Vice Chairman, Danquah Smith-Buttey, has publicly questioned the quality of advice being given to the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The bold statement was made during an interview on Hot 93.9FM’s Hot Morning Drive, hosted by Don Kwabena Prah. Chairman Buttey did not hold back in his assessment of Bawumia’s recent Thank-You Tour, which he claims failed to fulfill its intended purpose.
“I don’t believe the Thank-You Tour achieved its intended purpose,” Buttey stated, adding that the tour should have focused on highlighting the NPP’s accomplishments rather than airing internal disputes.
The tour, which was led by Dr. Bawumia, aimed to express gratitude to party executives, grassroots members, and the Ghanaian electorate following the December 7, 2024 elections. However, it quickly became embroiled in controversy after Bawumia accused certain individuals within the outgoing administration of sabotaging his campaign by increasing petrol prices just days before the polls.
Chairman Buttey’s response was sharp and clear. He suggested that such statements by Dr. Bawumia were misguided and reflective of poor counsel.
“From what he said, I don’t think Dr. Bawumia has good advisors,” Buttey remarked solemnly.
His comments have added fuel to existing tensions within the party, raising concerns about unity and strategic direction as the NPP looks to regroup after its electoral performance. Many political observers now question whether the public airing of internal grievances could weaken the party’s chances of a rebound in the next political cycle.
