Bawumia: Desperation pushed NDC gov’t to tax condoms, cutlasses

Economic pundit and running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says the ruling NDC government imposed taxes on condoms, cutlasses and savings as a result of its desperation to seal the huge fiscal hole.

According to the economist, the government has been reckless in its spending particularly in the election year, thus going for an IMF bailout.

He mentioned the imposition of taxes on these items are traced to weak policy implementation and lack of policy credibility spearheaded by the incompetent Mahama administration.

He said this at the National Theatre on Thursday during a lecture on the state of the economy.

That notwithstanding, teacher and nurses trainee allowances, as well as research allowances, have all been cancelled in order to raise revenue to solve the huge fiscal deficit.
