Bawku Needs More Security Personnel – Commander

Bawku (U/E) Feb. 14, GNA – Peter King Gyinae, Bawku Municipal Commander of Police, on Thursday appealed for reinforcement of Security Personnel to help to keep the Bawku town calm. “The people are recalcitrant and our men have to be everywhere all the time. The Officers for instance had to monitor the entire place the whole of last night and had to continue today due to the situation,” the Chief Superintendent of Police said. Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Bawku, Chief Supt. Gyinae said gunshots heard on Tuesday night continued to Wednesday when two men were seriously beaten by a rival group and were sent to the Bawku Hospital, with one unconscious. He said the incident agitated some people leading to the burning down of two houses and a lorry while some continued to shoot from hidden places.

He said as a result of the panic created, the official time for the curfew given to start from 1700 hours to 0600 hours had been shifted at the local level to start at 1600 hours and end at 0600 hours, “all offices are closed and the whole town is as quiet as a cemetery at this time of 1630 hours,” he said.

Mr David Nar-ire, Bawku Municipal Coordinating Director, explained that a group of Mamprusis had called at the Office to discuss the sporadic shooting of the previous night and the general situation in the Township and to see how best they could bring some peace. He said it was when they were going back that one of them, popularly known as Teacher Rokes, an educationist, was attacked and beaten to a state of unconscious and was rushed to the hospital. The injured has since been referred to the Bolgatanga Hospital, he said. 14 Feb. 08
