Bawku Municipal Assembly moves to improve on sanitation

A seven member Municipal Inter-Agency Coordinating Committee (MIACC) was inaugurated at the weekend in the Bawku Municipality to ensure good sanitation in the area.

The members are representatives of the Community Development Agency, Ghana Health Service, the Red Cross and the Municipal Assembly, the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, Ghana Education Service and Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

The committee had been charged to ensure the running of a programme dubbed, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), which is to ensure the provision of potable water, clean environment and the promotion of environmental hygiene in the area.

Mr. Dramani Imurana, Assistant Director in charge of human resource of the assembly, who chaired the committee on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Abduliah Musah, noted that the area was overwhelmed with poor sanitation and that it is about time clean up and promote good health.

He explained that environmental health was a major priority to the assembly and that it was committed to ensuring the promotion of good sanitation in the area for the well-being of the people.

Mr. Emmanuel Nyaaba, Municipal Environmental Health and Sanitation Officer, lamented on the challenges facing the environmental health sector which include poor supply of fuel for vehicles to help dispose of waste, and the lack of other logistics to manage waste in the area.

He said as a result of the conflict in the area, no development partner such as non-governmental organizations (NGO) interested in sanitation were prepared to come to the area to assist and appealed for support.
