Bawku court holds GES man over fraud allegation

Bawku (U/E), Nov 4, GNA – A Bawku circuit court has remanded an accountant with the Builsa District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) at Sandema for defrauding by false pretences.

Abdulai Ndagu Awini, 42, managed to secure a loan of 2 million cedis from the Bawku branch of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) knowing that he had been transferred from Bawku to Sandema in August last year.

Presenting the facts of the case to the court Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Paul Eklo said the management of ADB granted a loan of 2 million cedis.

The money was to be deducted from the Awini’s salary on monthly instalments for 10 months starting from September last year. He said the accused managed to make contacts at the Controller and Accountant General’s Department for his salary to be transferred to Social Security Bank (SSB) at Bolgatanga.

ASP Eklo said when ADB detected that Awini’s salary was not forthcoming it contacted GES at Bawku where it was revealed that Awini had been transferred to Sandema and that his salary was being sent to SSB, Bolgatanga.

When ADB contacted SSB to have the deductions made from Awini’s account, the bank was told that he had already secured a loan of 3 million cedis from that bank also.

ADB traced the accused to his place of work in June to negotiate the terms of payment of the loan that had then accumulated to 4,480,000 cedis, including outstanding interests and costs for over a year. He said Awini played hide and seek with ADB until the matter was reported to the police.
