Tema, Dec. 23, GNA – Madam Elizabeth Amoah-Tetteh, Deputy Minster of Education in charge of Pre-Tertiary Education, has underscored the need to improve the working conditions of teachers.
She said as foundation-builders, teachers, especially those at the basic level, should be given the right kind of motivation to boost their morale in order for them to give of their best.
Madam Amoah-Tetteh made the call at a get-together organised for teachers in the Tema West Constituency by the Member of Parliament (MP) of the area, Mrs Irene Naa Torshie Addo.
The function was aimed at bringing teachers together to interact with them to know their problems and find ways and means of addressing them. Some of the problems, which the teachers enumerated, were accommodation, delays in the payment of allowances and undue delay in promotion.
Madam Amoah-Tetteh, a professional teacher, lauded teachers for their immense sacrifices towards the upbringing of the nation’s future leaders, admitting that without a teacher the nation could not be built. She pleaded with teachers to exercise restraint because government was doing everything possible to ensure that they were provided with the necessary incentives to enable them to deliver.
“Let’s be extra patience and leave the rest with God and see what He can do through the government,” the Deputy Minister said. Madam Amoah-Tetteh used the occasion to exhort teachers to avail themselves of the numerous opportunities offered by the Long Distance Education Programme to upgrade themselves.
The MP pledged to invest greater part of her share of the Common in Education to ensure that majority of children in the constituency had access to quality education. Mrs Addo assured teachers in the constituency that she would assist them to improve their conditions and urged them to form clubs. 23 Dec. 09
