Basic school teachers in Sekyere West embark on strike

Mampong (Ash), Oct 20, GNA 96 Basic School Teachers in the Sekyere West District of the Ashanti Region on Thursday joined their colleagues on the nationwide strike to demand ‘equity’ in the conditions of service for Teachers and other public sector workers.

A source close to the District Secretariat of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) told the Ghana News Agency that the decision to lay down their tools was taken at an emergency meeting of the Association held at Mampong-Ashanti on Wednesday. He said the action was in support of their sister Union, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), which has been on strike for more than one month now because of poor conditions of service.

The source said the District Office of GNAT has dispatched letters to all village schools in the area, asking that all members of the Association should sit down until further notice. A visit to some basic schools in the Mampong showed that classrooms were locked and pupils seen playing.
