Barnor Hospital undertakes free public screening exercise

Barnor Hospital has undertaken free medical screening exercise for variety of diseases, to alert the public on the need to visit a health centre for checkup at least twice a year, to secure their health.

The exercise had more than 500 people screened in the eye and dentition, breast and cervical cancer, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, hepatitis B, and HIV.

Mr George Baffour-Akowuah, the Hospital’s Administrator said the exercise was also undertaken in memory of the Founder, Dr Matthew Anum Barnor who passed on, on June 20, 2005.

He said the GH? 28,000.00 programme included a health walk embarked on by staff of the hospital and members of the public on the eve of the screening exercise to inform people on health tips that should not be overlooked.

He said the hospital decided to screen people on the selected diseases because they are lifestyle diseases which are usually promoted by attitude of individuals, and therefore making them the commonest in the country.

“Over 5,000 flyers of health tips were distributed during the health walk to the public,” he said.

Mr Baffour-Akowuah said those screened would be provided with medication.

He said the public response was very good that called for more canopies and chairs.

He said the exercise was opened to everyone but was mostly attended by residents in Larterbiokorshie, Dansoman, Mataheko, Korle-Bu, and Mamprobi.

The Administrator expressed gratitude to Tobinco, Ayrton Drugs, M and G, and Ernest Chemist, for supporting the exercise with free drugs.

The Barnor Hospital is a private hospital that started operation in 1958 as a clinic transformed into a hospital in 1972.
