Bar operator fines for digging pit latrine

Nkawie (Ash), Jan 10, GNA – The Nkawie Circuit Court has imposed a fine of GH=A2100 on Mark Annan, a beer bar operator of Sepase in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District, for digging a pit latrine on the premises of his residential building.

Annan, who was also accused of selling drinks to the public without medical certificate, will serve four months imprisonment in hard labour if he fails to pay the fine. Mr. Austin Dubick, Environmental Health Prosecutor, told the court that on December 06 last year, environmental health officers at the Abuakwa Sub District on their normal routine checks found that the pit latrine was producing offensive odour and attracted flies. Mr. Dubick said when the convict’s attention was drawn to it he hurled insults at the officials and told them he dealt directly with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and not Environmental Health Officers.
