Bagbin mocks new design of parliament

Majority Leader of Parliament Alban Sumana Kinsford Bagbin says the new design of the main chamber of Ghana’s Parliament is more like that for an international conference than for legislative duties.

He said frantic steps should be taken by authorities to get Ghana a “befitting” Parliament.

The Nadowli-Kaleo Member of Parliament expressed this sentiment on the floor on Tuesday, November 4 at the resumption of the Sixth Parliament.

It resumed for its final meeting of the year.

Members resumed into a fully furnished chamber with internet-connected electronic devices fitted to aid parliamentary work.

“I hope and pray that this will not be a nine-day wonder and that we will move from here to try and construct a befitting parliament for Ghana,” Mr Bagbin, who has been a Member of Parliament since 1993, said.

He observed: “This is a construct for an international conference and, therefore, is not particularly suited for a parliamentary chamber.”

First bold step

Mr Bagbin’s opposite number, Osei-Kyei Mensa-Bonsu, was, however, impressed with the new layout, describing it as “the first bold step”.

“Let us see how we are going to continue with this,” the Suame Constituency MP said.
