Baby Death

Nursing mother assists police on death of baby found in a bucket

Aflao, Sept. 27, GNA – The Aflao Police are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a three-month old baby girl found in a bucket of water with a lid in her mother’s bedroom. Police sources told GNA that Evelyn Wemega 32, mother of the baby, claimed that on August 30, this year, she placed her baby who was asleep on their bed while she went out to purchase some drugs in a nearby chemical shop.

The source said she returned to find the baby in the bucket, placed some distance away from the bed dead.

It alleged that the police had information that Evelyn suffocated her baby to death to enable her travel with a sister to Nigeria. The source said when Evelyn’s sister arrived from Nigeria, she expressed reservations about her having a baby that would not enable her (Evelyn) to travel with her to Nigeria.

Meanwhile Evelyn and five elders of her family (names withheld) had been granted police enquiry bail.

They were arrested for failing to report the incident to the police before hurriedly burying the baby.
