The Brong-Ahafo region recorded 25 rabies cases between January, 2009 and August, 2012. Within the period, five people died from rabies infection.
The regional Director of the Veterinary Service, Mr. Kenneth Gbeddy gave the record in an interview with Storm FM’s Nana Antwi on World Rabies Day which falls on September 28 every year.
The region director called on persons bitten or exposed to rabies to report to health center or the veterinary office for treatment within 12 hours of exposure to avoid death.
Mr. Gbebby said rabies is preventable and all efforts should be put in place by pets owners and the general public to help prevent human deaths.
The objective of World Rabies Day is to raise awareness about the impact of human and animal rabies, how easy it is to prevent it, and how to eliminate the main global sources, he added.
Meanwhile, the regional Veterinary Epidemiologist, Dr. Fantang Danso also urged pet owners to send their pets for vaccination and appealed to district and municipal assemblies to come to their aid.
He added that “we are doing our best to educate the public on the awareness about the impact of human and animal rabies but we need support from the assemblies”.
