Ayawaso West-Wuogon Case adjourned sine die

Accra, April 10, GNA – The re-constituted panel of the Court of Appeal on the disputed Ayawaso West-Wuogon parliamentary seat could not sit on Monday because one of the members was reported to be indisposed.

Before the case could be called, the two parties and their counsel were invited into chambers where a communication from the personnel manager of the Judicial Service informed them that Mr Justice Omari Sasu was sick.

Since his excuse duty period would run into the Easter holidays, the court had no alternative than to adjourn the case “sine die”. Mr Isaac Amoo, candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is challenging the declaration by the Electoral Commission of Mrs Rebecca Adotey, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate as winner of the vote in 1996.

Mr Amoo challenged the results in court, and a ruling was given in his favour. The court ordered the EC to replace Mrs Adotey in Parliament with Mr Amoo, but just before the order could be carried out, Mrs Adotey, who is also a deputy minister of communications filed a stay of execution at the Appeal Court praying it to set aside the previous order.

Mrs Georgina Wood, a member of the panel in the present suit, declined to be on the panel because she was on the panel that sat on Amoo’s appeal. The re-constituted panel is made up of Mr Justice Ansah-Akrofi, Mr Justice P. K. Twumasi and Mr Justice Omari Sasu.
