Accra, Feb. 7, GNA – The African Youth Alliance (AYA) Ghana, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), on Friday presented a Toyota Land cruiser and office equipment worth 60,000 dollars to the National Youth Council (NYC) to facilitate the effective implementation of the Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health (ASRH) project in Ghana.
Dr Robert Mensah, Country Director of the AYA presented the items which also included, five desktop computers, one laptop computer, six filling cabinets, 20 electronic typewriters and six binding machines. The programme which coincided with the closing ceremony of a two-week workshop on policy and advocacy organized by the NYC/AYA in Accra, is to equip youth leaders to enable them to meet the challenges facing the ASRH programme in Ghana.
Receiving the items, Mr Kwadwo Baah Wiredu, Minister of Education Youth and Sports expressed his appreciation for the contribution AYA had made towards resolving the problem of ASRH and the fight against HIV/AIDS in particular.
He said sexual and reproductive health of the youth was increasingly becoming a serious problem and said “government will not shirk its responsibility to the health needs of our younger citizen” Mr Baah Wiredu pledged his ministry full support for AYA projects and urged the management of the NYC to take advantage of the project and provide the youth with valuable information and education that would help them mould and shape their lives.
Mr Joe Mante, National Co-ordinator of the NYC, commended the staff of the AYA and Pathfinder International, another NGO for donating 25 million cedis toward the payment of the school fees of a number of needy students at the Youth Leadership and Skills Training Institute at Afienya.
He said the NYC had awarded scholarship to 30 students from the Volta, Upper East and Upper West regions.
