Awutu-Effutu-Senya GNAT conference opens at Winneba

Winneba (C/R), June 5, GNA – A lecturer of the Winneba of Education, Professor Samuel Quartey has urged teachers to inspire their students to apply the knowledge they acquire in school to improve society.

He said the present education system whereby students only study to pass an examination and acquire a certificate without applying the knowledge acquired towards building the nation is not the best. Prof Quartey was speaking at the opening of the second quadrennial delegates’ conference of the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District branch of the Ghana National Association Teachers (GNAT) at Winneba at the weekend. The theme for the one-day conference was: “Building a new Ghana Through quality education”.

Prof Quartey said if teachers could make students see the essence of the topics they are taught, they would constantly be reflecting on how the knowledge acquired could be used.

“Teachers are not able to make their students realize that the subjects they are teaching are being studied because they have contributions to make to national development,” he said. The deputy district director of Education, Mr. Ekow Ayamful appealed to members of the National Association of Graduate Teachers who are currently on strike, to rescind their decision and go back to the classroom while they dialogue with the authorities over their demand for better conditions of service.

Mr Ayamful called on teachers to desist from excessive drinking habit and also should lead decent life worthy of emulation. The General Secretary of GNAT, Madam Duncan Adanusa, explained 05 June 05
