Winneba (C/R), June 6, GNA – Members of the Awutu-Effutu-Senya branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has elected new executives at their one-day second quadrennial conference at Winneba.
The new executives have Mr. Ato Bortsie as Chairman, Mr. G P K Damalie, Vice Chairman, Madam Lily Otoo, Secretary, Miss Philipa Larsen, Treasurer and Mr. Victor Tetteh, Trustee.
Four persons, Messer Justice Darbra, Samuel Quartey, Paul K. Ekpale and Miss Agnes Nkrumah were elected as executive members. In a resolution at the end of the conference, the Teachers called for the employment of more Pupil Teachers and the posting of more National Service Personnel to reduce the workload on them that had resulted in one teacher handling more than one class. The resolution urged the government to extend the SSNIT loan scheme to cover teachers taking part in the distance education programme to motivate them.
It suggested that teachers quarters should attached to any new school that would be constructed to help ease accommodation problem facing teachers.
The resolution urged GNAT to fight for the restoration of salary advance if it had been cancelled because teachers were not enjoying it. It called for upward review and early payment of the allowance paid teachers for supervision and invigilation during examination by West African Examination Council and Ghana Education Service.
Mr Samuel Quartey, a Lecturer of the Winneba University of Education, urged teachers to be focused and to teach students not only to acquire knowledge without understanding and applying them. According to him many teachers did not have a teaching philosophy to guide them and did their work just anyhow.
Mr. Bortsie on behalf of the executives thanked the members for the confidence reposed in them and promised to work hard.
