Australian High Commission sponsored bakery commissioned at Agotime-Afegame

Agotime-Afegame (V/R), Sept. 03,GNA-A 12,560.80 Ghana cedi training bakery for young women and girls at Agotime-Afegame in the Adaklu-Anyigbe District was commissioned on Wednesday.

The facility would be upgraded into a vocational training centre to offer training in soap making, hairdressing, kente weaving and bead making among others to prevent girls and young women in the border community from migrating to nearby Republic of Togo.

The project was initiated by Global Action for Women Empowerment (GLOWA), an NGO with financial support from the Australian High Commission.

Mr. Joseph Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister noted that small-scale technology has a very crucial role to play in raising productivity among small-scale operators, especially in the rural areas.

He advised girls and women in the community to form cooperative groups for them to access financial support to establish themselves.

Mr. Amenowode commended the Australian High Commission for the assistance and pledged the readiness of the Regional Coordinating Council to provide the needed support to propel the development of similar facilities in other communities in the region.

Madam Christine Enyonam Kugbeadzor, Executive Director of GLOWA, said the project followed a needs assessment and hoped it would transform the socio-economic status of the community.

She was optimistic that about 70 per cent of young school leavers would be trained and equipped with livelihood skills to fend for themselves whiles about 60 per cent of women trained with the skills would be able to support their families and contribute their quota to the development of the community, the district and the nation.
